Job Description
The Northville District Library seeks an enthusiastic, creative and innovative Youth Services Librarian to join our community-focused team. In this role, you will champion early literacy, foster a love of reading, and connect with youth of all ages through engaging outreach and dynamic library programming.
Position Overview:
- Hours: Part-time (24 hours per week).
- Classification: Union position.

Essential Qualifications:
- Programming & Outreach: Develop, implement, and host engaging youth programs, including story times, Summer Reading, STEAM activities, crafts, and hosting performers. Participate in community and school outreach.
- Collection Development: Develop and maintain youth collection areas by reviewing, evaluating, selecting, purchasing, and withdrawing materials.
- Reference & Instruction: Provide reference, readers' advisory, and information literacy support to users of all ages at the Information and Reference Desks.
- Leadership & Operations: Serve as the Librarian-in-Charge of the building when assigned and recommend changes to services based on emerging library trends.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Experience: Strong public service orientation and a deep commitment to serving youth patrons.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with both current and classic youth literature, pop culture, and social trends. Ability to create new services and procedures incorporating new theories.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office, online research databases, social media, and emerging library technologies.
- Soft Skills: Excellent interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, or crouch.
- Must have the ability to lift and move library supplies or media materials weighing up to 40 pounds and frequently push or pull loaded book carts throughout the facility.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited program (with at least one year completed) will be considered.
