Job Description

Lifecycle Growth Consultant

Freelance | 15–20 hours per week | Remote | $130–$150/hr

Company

Mechanism builds profitable companies and turns them into enterprises.

Since 2019, we've launched and scaled 10 companies while driving $200M+ in revenue by treating company-building as an engineering problem—not an art project. We combine rigorous validation, advanced analytics, and repeatable systems to dramatically increase the odds of success.

Today, we are pushing that model further: building an operating system for entrepreneurship that allows us to launch profitable, reinvesting companies with speed, precision, and minimal waste—companies designed to reach millions, and eventually billions, of people.

This role sits at the center of that system.

The Role

The Lifecycle Growth Consultant is a senior lifecycle operator who owns the strategy, systems, and revenue behind customer journeys across Mechanism's portfolio of direct-to-consumer companies.

You are not waiting for a brief.

You are not building another abandoned-cart flow from a template.

You are not a production resource at the end of someone else's calendar.

You are brought in to diagnose, design, and build the lifecycle engine that compounds revenue across a portfolio—fast.

Given a business goal, you develop the strategy, build the system, and own the result. That may mean designing a new retention strategy, repairing deliverability, warming a domain, rebuilding customer segmentation, standing up a sophisticated experimentation program, or identifying an entirely new way to increase repeat purchase behavior.

The right person understands DTC deeply, stays ahead of what is changing, and knows how to turn Shopify, Klaviyo, customer data, and AI into measurable growth. This is a senior-owner engagement with accountability for outcomes—not hand-offs.

How This Works at Mechanism

You will report directly to our Chief Growth Officer and partner closely with growth leaders, company operators, creative teams, and other members of Mechanism's centralized team.

You will be expected to bring expertise we do not already have internally. Our Growth team provides the business context and the desired outcome. You determine the best path forward, move quickly, and own the result.

The support around this role includes:

  • A portfolio of active DTC companies with real customers, data, and growth opportunities

  • Centralized support across growth, engineering, design, creative, analytics, and operations

  • Direct access to senior leaders when decisions need to be made

  • The autonomy to test, build, and improve without unnecessary layers

Our explicit goal is to maximize your leverage—so small, correct inputs produce outsized results. Think rolling boulders downhill, not pushing them uphill.

What You Own

You are accountable for:

  • Lifecycle strategy and performance across your assigned Mechanism companies

  • Revenue generated through email, SMS, retention, and customer reactivation

  • Customer segmentation, journey design, testing strategy, and campaign prioritization

  • Deliverability, domain health, sender reputation, and technical lifecycle infrastructure

  • Improving repeat purchase rate, customer lifetime value, engagement, and retention

  • Identifying high-leverage opportunities before someone has to assign them

  • Building systems, playbooks, and automations that can be reused across the portfolio

You are not responsible for:

  • Paid acquisition or media buying

  • Brand strategy or creative production

  • Formal people management—you raise the bar for internal lifecycle efforts through playbooks, coaching, and example, not reporting lines

Those functions exist to support the lifecycle engine—not dilute it.

What You'll Do

  • Audit existing lifecycle programs, customer journeys, account architecture, and performance

  • Build lifecycle strategies tied directly to revenue, retention, and customer behavior

  • Design and launch sophisticated email and SMS journeys beyond standard out-of-the-box flows

  • Improve deliverability through domain warming, list hygiene, sender-reputation management, and technical troubleshooting

  • Develop segmentation strategies based on purchase behavior, lifecycle stage, product usage, engagement, and predicted customer value

  • Create high-cadence testing programs across messaging, offers, timing, creative, frequency, and journey structure

  • Use Shopify, Klaviyo, and adjacent platforms to connect customer behavior with lifecycle execution

  • Partner with growth, creative, engineering, and company teams to ship campaigns and technical improvements quickly

  • Use Claude and other AI tools to accelerate research, analysis, personalization, copy development, QA, documentation, and experimentation

  • Translate performance data into clear decisions about what to scale, change, or stop

  • Codify successful strategies into reusable playbooks, prompts, templates, and automations

  • Provide concise written updates on progress, results, learnings, and blockers

Who This Is For

This role is for someone who has built lifecycle engines for real DTC brands and never became disconnected from the work. You have owned meaningful lifecycle revenue, solved difficult retention problems, and stayed technically close enough to the platforms to build what you recommend.

This role is ideal if you:

  • Think in customer journeys and systems, not isolated campaigns

  • Move comfortably between strategy, data, copy, creative, and technical execution

  • Know the difference between launching more flows and building a stronger lifecycle engine

  • Regularly bring ideas to the table before being asked

  • Understand the economics and operating realities of DTC brands

  • Can turn an open-ended business goal into a clear plan and a measurable result

  • Are highly responsive and comfortable moving at startup speed

  • Use AI as part of how you think and operate, not simply as a writing assistant

  • Care about performance and are comfortable being held accountable to clear metrics

This is not a freelance production seat inside someone else’s calendar.

It is a chance to build the lifecycle engine behind a portfolio of companies designed to matter, inside a system optimized for speed, clarity, and compounding leverage.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in lifecycle, retention, CRM, or email and SMS marketing

  • Deep experience working with DTC and e-commerce brands

  • Advanced, current, hands-on knowledge of Klaviyo and Shopify

  • Demonstrated success improving lifecycle revenue, repeat purchase behavior, retention, or customer lifetime value

  • Strong technical understanding of deliverability, domain warming, sender reputation, consent, and email and SMS compliance

  • Experience designing sophisticated segmentation and automated customer journeys

  • Experience building and managing structured experimentation programs, with the analytical instincts to connect lifecycle performance to business outcomes

  • Excellent written communication and strong creative judgment

  • Bias toward action—the ability to ship in hours and days, not weeks—and to operate independently in a remote, high-accountability environment

  • AI-native working style, with meaningful hands-on experience using Claude and modern lifecycle tooling to accelerate and improve your work

What Success Looks Like

Within 30 days: You are fully embedded and owning lifecycle work end to end. You have assessed the existing programs, identified the highest-leverage opportunities, and begun shipping improvements across strategy, segmentation, campaigns, flows, deliverability, and reporting.

Within 60 days: You are operating as the senior lifecycle owner for your assigned companies—setting priorities, driving execution, and holding the work accountable to clear performance goals. You are beginning to codify best practices and coach internal lifecycle managers on stronger strategy, execution, and use of AI.

Within 90 days: You have built a more sophisticated and reliable lifecycle engine, demonstrated measurable business impact, and created repeatable systems that scale across the portfolio. You are a force multiplier—training and elevating the people around you, not just producing the work yourself.

Logistics

  • Freelance independent contractor engagement

  • Approximately 15–20 hours per week to begin, with scope and weekly commitment growing based on performance and portfolio needs

  • Fully remote

  • Minimum 4-hour daily overlap with Mechanism's Eastern Time working hours (9am–6pm ET), available via Slack

  • Direct reporting relationship to our Chief Growth Officer

  • Engagement structured around clear deliverables, performance expectations, and communication standards—direct mentions acknowledged within 3 hours, full responses within 24 business hours

  • Contractor provides their own equipment and maintains reliable internet access

Compensation

$130–$150 USD per hour, based on experience and demonstrated depth across DTC lifecycle strategy, Klaviyo, Shopify, deliverability, technical execution, and AI-enabled systems.

This engagement is designed to grow. Operators who deliver measurable results can expand into more hours, more companies, and a larger seat in the lifecycle engine as the portfolio scales.

Time Commitment

This role is full-time and will need to overlap with US ET for the majority of the workday. It is an exciting opportunity that demands a level of dedication beyond the standard 9 to 5. We need someone who's willing to go above and beyond to help us achieve our ambitious goals, and who's eager to put in the effort to make a real impact.

Location

US-Based - Fully remote.

Compensation

Our compensation packages are designed to make this your dream job for the short and long term. Each compensation package is tailored to suit your priorities and can include base, equity in the companies we help build, and performance bonus based on the success of our portfolio companies. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and an unlimited time off policy with a two-week minimum.
