Job Description

The Corners Coach is responsible for coaching and developing student-athletes assigned to the cornerback position while supporting the overall defensive philosophy of the football program. This position contributes to competitive success, recruiting efforts, and student-athlete development while maintaining full compliance with NCAA Division II, conference, and institutional regulations. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Coaching & Player Development 

  • Coach cornerbacks in position-specific fundamentals, techniques, and schemes 

  • Teach coverage techniques, press and off-man coverage, footwork, tackling, and ball skills 

  • Assist with defensive practice planning, drills, and game preparation 

  • Evaluate player performance through film analysis and practice assessment 

  • Promote academic success, discipline, and personal development of student-athletes 

Game Planning & Analysis 

  • Assist the Defensive Coordinator with opponent scouting, film breakdown, and game planning 

  • Prepare scouting reports and self-scout evaluations related to pass defense 

  • Participate in game-day coaching responsibilities and in-game adjustments 

Recruiting 

  • Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes for the cornerback position in accordance with NCAA Division II rules 

  • Maintain recruiting documentation and databases 

  • Assist with official and unofficial visits and recruiting events 

Administration & Compliance 

  • Ensure compliance with all NCAA Division II, conference, and institutional rules 

  • Assist with monitoring academic progress, eligibility, and conduct of assigned student-athletes 

  • Complete required administrative documentation and reports 

  • Represent the football program and university in a professional manner 

Program Support & Additional Duties 

  • Assist with camps, clinics, fundraising, and community engagement activities 

  • Support strength and conditioning programming for defensive backs in coordination with athletic performance staff 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Football Coach or Athletic Administration 

  • Assist in transportation of athletes to/from athletic events, which may include driving a full-size passenger van or other large capacity vehicle. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree/or equivalent working experience from an accredited institution 

  • Playing and/or coaching experience at the cornerback or defensive back position 

  • Knowledge of defensive schemes and coverage concepts 

  • Understanding of NCAA Division II rules and regulations 

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills 

  • Must have a State of Texas or Arkansas class "C" vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.  

  • Acceptable driving record and periodic completion of van safety course 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Collegiate coaching experience, preferably at the NCAA Division II level 

  • Recruiting experience at the collegiate level 

  • Master’s degree 

  • Experience with video analysis platforms (e.g., Hudl, XOS) 

 

Other Requirements 

  • Ability to travel extensively and work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Physical Requirements

    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    • Working in all weather conditions, exposure to high noise levels, standing throughout the day, the ability to use a loud voice at practices and events and physical involvement in all practices and workouts with players.
