Overview
Assists with planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities of the food and nutrition department according to established policies. Perform clinical duties on assigned units. Review and interpret nutrition orders to ensure accuracy. Monitor food intolerance, allergies and preferences, relate information to diet aide. Perform nutrition education and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Maintain accurate records of each patient contact and the result of that contact. Make recommendations and update outcomes of parenteral/enteral nutrition interventions. Maintain all documentations by using designated electronic medical records. Demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with challenging patients.

Responsibilities
Reviews and interprets diet orders to ensure accuracy and to check if diet is within guidelines of diet manual.
Monitors food intolerance, allergies and preferences, relates information to diet aide.
Performs diet instructions for modified diets.
Maintains accurate records of each patient contact and the results of that contact.
Maintains accurate record of diet instructions performed.
Calculates diabetic, renal, low sodium diets, tube feeding, and hyper-alimentation accurately.
Accurately observes and supervises the work performed by the Diet Aide.
Performs appropriate charting in the medical record to comply with department policy.
Performs diet instruction upon physician order within 24 hours.
Responsible for the completion of all assigned work procedures during the shift without interference in the quality of work performed.
Responds to changes in the workload schedule as necessary, always works on special projects, updates patient education material, etc.
Leaving Patient’s room: “is there anything else you need before I leave the room?”
Does not allow unimportant interruptions to waste time at the expense of assigned duties and patient care priorities.

Demonstrates tact and diplomacy when handling difficult patients.
Demonstrates good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all members of Dietary.
Supervises support personnel in a fair and firm manner.
Demonstrate the essence of patient relations: courtesy, dignity, and respect.
Always recognizes the delivery of quality nutrition care as the top priority.
Plans shift according to the most important responsibilities such as visiting new patients, diet instructions, and quality assurance programs.
Recognizes and performs duties that need to be performed, delegates duties to supportive personnel as necessary.
Organizes and performs projects on own initiative.
The care giver possesses the ability to understand and react effectively to the patients’ unique needs at the following levels:
- Neonatal
- Pediatric
- Adolescent
- Adult
- Geriatric
