Job Summary 


The officer supports the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) mission to provide students, employees, and guests of the university with a safe and secure environment in which to study, work, and enjoy programs offered by the university.


 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Director of University DPS. 


 



  1. Provide safety and security services based on proven Christian integrity and ethics consistent with the University Mission Statement

  2. Provide general customer service

  3. Provide general support and emergency response services

  4. Complete daily shift log reports

  5. Maintain constant contact with others via cellular telephone and/or radio

  6. Issue university parking violation warnings and citations

  7. Guard university and personal property against damage, fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry by performing the following duties:

    1. Routine patrol of buildings and grounds of the university on foot or in patrol vehicles

    2. Examine doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure

    3. Warn violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles, and report to the Chief / Director of University DPS and/or local law enforcement agencies, persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts

    4. Inspect equipment and machinery to determine if tampering has occurred

    5. Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes or other building safety hazards, and security doors left unlocked

    6. Observe individuals to guard against theft of university property

    7. Sound alarm or call the police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or illegal activities

    8. Allow authorized persons to enter the property

    9. Record data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning machinery or equipment, for use of supervisory staff

    10. Respond to calls for service. Take incident/offense reports and initiate the investigations of incidents/offenses

Qualifications 


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   1. Education and/or Experience - High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; Prior public safety experience in an educational setting is preferred

  2. Relational Skills – pleasant demeanor, positive attitude, kindness in interactions with others and a customer service mindset

  3. Language Skills - Ability to effectively read, write and comprehend Ability to read simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, guests, and employees of the university

  4. Math Skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

  5. Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

  6. Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of and be able to use Microsoft Outlook email software, Microsoft Word, and commonly used Internet browsers

  7. License - As a condition of employment, the employee maintains a current Texas driver's license and be at least 21 years of age to drive any vehicle, including personal vehicles, on behalf of the university

  8. Work Schedule Requirements – Part-Time Public Safety Officers are assigned a variable work schedule. This schedule may be altered to meet the needs of the department. Alterations may be made to accommodate special University events, emergencies, and/or staff member sick leave, vacation, holiday leave, and emergency leave.

  9. Physical Demands - The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
