Position Summary:


The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) II evaluates, assists in the interpreting of results, and analyzes blood and body fluids using both automated and complex manual methods following established policies and procedures to ensure the highest quality of laboratory results within established timeframes.


Responsibilities


Essential Functions \u2022 Evaluates specimens for quality and preanalytical errors. \u2022 Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability. \u2022 Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures. \u2022 Receives a general guidance and direction, typically on moderately complex procedures only. \u2022 Has knowledge of other areas in the laboratory and how they are related. \u2022 Works semi-autonomously to accomplish task assigned. \u2022 Verify instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range and method comparisons. \u2022 Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions. \u2022 Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies. \u2022 Assists with inventory management. \u2022 Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver. \u2022 Evaluate accuracy of results considering all phases of testing to include preanalytical, analytical and post analytical sources of error. \u2022 Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS. \u2022 Responds to work related technical inquiries. \u2022 Assists in the training of new team members and students. \u2022 Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. \u2022 Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures. Other Related Functions \u2022 Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required. \u2022 Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department. \u2022 Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel. \u2022 Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements. \u2022 Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area. \u2022 Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.


Qualifications


Education/Training \u2022 Bachelor\u2019s degree required. Associate\u2019s degree and two years of directly related experience may substitute for the Bachelor\u2019s degree (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section). \u2022 Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship. Licensure/Certification \u2022 National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred. Experience One (1) years minimum experience. Based on area of assignment department specific competencies may be required.
